Description
A second impression from the "Twilight B" limited edition, this print represents one of Kawano's atmospheric night-scene subjects in a hand-signed, numbered run. The "B" designation indicates a chromatic variant of the primary "Twilight" composition, printed from the same carved blocks with a different ink selection. In [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga), producing multiple color states of a single carving allowed the artist to study how palette affects emotional register — a practice that aligned with the movement's emphasis on personal experimentation. A twilight subject in Kawano's hand would likely feature a female figure partially obscured by shadow, or a simplified landscape reduced to silhouette against a darkening ground. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations would be an important technical element in rendering the subtle tonal shifts of the hour between daylight and dark, softening the otherwise assertive quality of Kawano's carved line. Successive impressions within a limited edition may show minor variation in ink density resulting from hand-printing, making each impression technically distinct.
