Description
A second impression of the "Woodpecker B" limited edition, printed from the same carved blocks as the related state. Woodpeckers posed an interesting technical challenge for the woodblock printmaker: the bird's characteristic posture — clinging vertically to tree bark, head angled sharply toward the wood surface — required careful compositional planning to convey the tensed, active quality of the pose within a static medium. Kawano's bold outlines would give the bird's form a clear silhouette against the tree trunk or background field, while gouge marks could simulate the texture of bark around the bird's grip. The "B" designation indicates a chromatic variant, with ink choices diverging from the primary state to explore how different palettes affect the bird's visual impact against the ground. As a limited edition work, each impression would have been hand-printed by Kawano using the baren — the circular pressing tool central to Japanese woodblock technique — ensuring consistency of pressure and ink transfer across the edition.
