Description
A nocturnal scene with snowfall. Mezzotint is particularly suited to night subjects because the rocked plate prints a uniform deep black before any burnishing; light is added by removing burr rather than applied as a positive element. Saito likely uses fine scraping to suggest falling flakes against the dark ground, with broader burnished passages indicating snow accumulated on surfaces or the diffused glow of a lantern. The composition relates to a long tradition of Japanese yoru no zu (night scenes), but the medium departs sharply from the woodblock-printed snow scenes of Hiroshige or Hasui. Saito worked in mezzotint alongside Hamaguchi Yozo as part of Japan's postwar engagement with European intaglio, applying its tonal vocabulary to motifs long handled by relief printing.
