This Katsukawa Shunsho bijinga, issued around 1769 as part of the series Nan'eki Shufu, depicts two courtesans on a moonlit balcony at a house of pleasure in Shinagawa, one of the unlicensed pleasure quarters that flourished alongside the licensed Yoshiwara in Edo. Shinagawa, located on the southern coastal approach to Edo and a major post-station on the Tokaido road, supported a thriving night life that catered to travelers and townspeople alike. Shunsho captures the two women on the balcony with the moon visible above, the composition staging an evocative blend of intimate genre scene and atmospheric landscape. The figures wear elegant patterned robes characteristic of their profession, their poses suggesting the quiet moments between formal engagements with patrons. Although best known as a yakusha-e specialist and founder of the Katsukawa school, Shunsho engaged the bijinga genre throughout his career, and series like Nan'eki Shufu document his contribution to Edo ukiyo-e depictions of the pleasure quarters beyond Yoshiwara. The atmospheric handling of the moonlit setting demonstrates his sensitivity to compositional mood and his fluency with the mature nishiki-e color printing that had emerged by the late 1760s. This impression is preserved at the Art Institute of Chicago. The print extends our understanding of Shunsho's range beyond the kabuki theater and contributes to documentation of the less frequently depicted unlicensed pleasure quarters that formed an important dimension of Edo's urban night culture.
