An Ancient Picture of the Boat Bridge at Sano in Kozuke Province belongs to Katsushika Hokusai's series Curious Views of Famous Bridges in the Provinces, a set of about 1830 in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The bridge at Sano was a celebrated literary site, formed by a row of boats lashed together to allow travelers to cross the river, and it appears in classical poetry and in episodes of the Tales of Ise. Hokusai pictures the bridge as historical reconstruction rather than direct observation, emphasizing the architectural ingenuity of the boat-bridge while populating the scene with travelers and porters that give the structure scale and rhythm. The series as a whole treats bridges throughout the country as engineering subjects, regional emblems, and stages for ordinary human passage, and it represents one of the more conceptually inventive of Hokusai's late landscape projects. As a [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) print designer he balances the precision of architectural drawing with the loose human geometry of figures in motion, creating compositions that read both as documents and as designs. The Cleveland Museum of Art preserves the sheet within its broader holdings of Hokusai material, where it complements the Fuji series and the Tour of Waterfalls by extending his geography to include man-made as well as natural landmarks. The print remains a key example of Edo ukiyo-e's interest in the infrastructure of Japanese travel.
