Description
Cherry Blossom Viewing at the Mimeguri Shrine is a tender ukiyo-e print by Katsushika Hokusai capturing one of Edo's most beloved spring rituals at a celebrated riverside shrine on the eastern bank of the Sumida. Mimeguri Inari shrine, surrounded by famous cherry trees, drew crowds during the hanami season who came to admire the blossoms, recite poetry, drink sake, and enjoy the pleasures of the floating world. Hokusai presents the gathering with his characteristic attention to social texture: groups of women in seasonal kimono, children at play, attendants serving food, and pilgrims pausing to look up into the canopy of pale pink flowers. The composition balances the architecture of the shrine, the curve of the Sumida, and the soft mass of blossoming branches in a way that reflects his deep understanding of Edo's annual rhythms. As a master of Edo ukiyo-e, Hokusai treats hanami not merely as decorative subject but as a meditation on impermanence, the cherry blossom standing for the brief, intense beauty of human life. The ukiyo-e print preserves the cultural memory of one of the Sumida's most picturesque spots in the early nineteenth century. The Harvard Art Museums hold this work in their distinguished Hokusai collection, where the impression's color and line remain in fine condition. For collectors, it is an exemplary Japanese woodblock celebration of Edo's spring.
