Description
Ehon Musashi Abumi, dated 1836, is an illustrated book by Katsushika Hokusai whose title means roughly Picture-Book of the Musashi Stirrup. The volume gathers ink illustrations on themes of historical warriors, classical legends, and scenes drawn from Edo life, demonstrating the range of subjects Hokusai mastered alongside his single-sheet ukiyo-e print designs. As a printed book rather than a hanging or folded print, the work shows how Edo woodblock publishers extended ukiyo-e techniques to bound editions intended for connoisseur readers. The Art Institute of Chicago example preserves the crisp keyblock impressions that allow individual figures to be read as distinct drawings, and the careful arrangement of vignettes across each opening reveals Hokusai's skill at orchestrating multi-scene compositions. By 1836, the artist was in his seventies and had developed a vocabulary of figure types, landscape conventions, and decorative motifs that allowed him to fill an entire book with disciplined invention. The title reference to the Musashi Stirrup invokes both a renowned poetic place name and the broader cultural pride of the Edo region, situating the book firmly within the late Edo ukiyo-e tradition. Although individual openings of Ehon Musashi Abumi are sometimes encountered detached from the book, the volume is most valuable when studied intact, where the rhythm of subjects unfolds the way Hokusai intended. The book demonstrates how Katsushika Hokusai conceived of the ukiyo-e print not only as a wall-bound object but as a sequenced reading experience, paralleling the achievements of his more famous Hokusai manga and reinforcing his role as one of the most prolific illustrators of nineteenth-century Japan.
