Description
Evening Glow at Jungai (Jungai sekisho) is an ukiyo-e print by Katsushika Hokusai from the series Eight Views of the Ryukyu Islands (Ryukyu hakkei), produced about 1827 and held in the Art Institute of Chicago. The 'eight views' format originated in Song-dynasty China and was widely adapted in Japan; Hokusai's Ryukyu set transposes the convention onto the imagined landscapes of the southern kingdom. Jungai, identified with one of the scenic locations near the Ryukyuan royal capital, here glows under the rich light of late afternoon, with hills, walls, and tile roofs catching warm color as figures move along paths and waterways. Hokusai designed the series without traveling to the islands, drawing on Chinese-language Ryukyuan gazetteers and contemporary Japanese curiosity about the kingdom's culture. The composition organizes foreground rooftops and middle-ground trees against distant mountains, using tonal printing of orange and rose to convey the 'evening glow' named in the title. As an Edo ukiyo-e print, the work participates in the early nineteenth-century vogue for imagined foreign landscapes, while showcasing the careful color registration and bokashi gradient printing that the Edo woodblock workshop had developed to a high art. The Art Institute of Chicago preserves this ukiyo-e print as a key Katsushika Hokusai exploration of distant geography refracted through the woodblock medium.
