The frontispiece to the illustrated album "Thirty-six Immortal Women Poets" (Nishikizuri onna sanjurokkasen) is a Katsushika Hokusai [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) print of about 1801 in the Art Institute of Chicago. The album reimagined the classical sanjurokkasen tradition, the canon of Thirty-six Immortal Poets, by replacing the male masters with thirty-six celebrated women poets drawn from the courtly past and Edo poetry circles. As frontispiece, this sheet introduces the volume with a balanced, ornamental composition that signals the book's literary ambitions and its connection to kyoka clubs, where amateur poets routinely cast themselves as modern heirs of the classical tradition. The careful color printing identifies the work as [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) of the highest quality, made for connoisseur subscribers rather than the mass market that dominated Edo ukiyo-e broadsides. Katsushika Hokusai's design integrates figure, calligraphy, and decorative motif in a single, harmonious sheet, demonstrating his comfort with literary-album conventions that complemented his more familiar landscape and figure work. The Four Sleepers and Tokaido sheets nearby in the Art Institute's collection share with this print a delicate kyoka-album palette and restrained drawing style. As a ukiyo-e print, the Nishikizuri onna sanjurokkasen frontispiece is also a useful document of how Edo's woman poets and patrons participated in the literary culture that supported much of Hokusai's early-1800s production. The Art Institute impression preserves the careful registration and luminous color of the original printing.
