Fujieda is a Katsushika Hokusai print from 1801, part of his series Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (Tokaido gojusan tsugi) at the Art Institute of Chicago. Fujieda was a post station in Suruga Province along the great Tokaido coastal road between Edo and Kyoto, and Hokusai's design illustrates the local landscape and traffic that defined the stop. Travelers, porters, packhorses, and perhaps shopkeepers and tea sellers populate the scene, while the surrounding terrain and architecture give a sense of Fujieda's position between river crossings and mountain stretches of the road. As an Edo ukiyo-e print, Fujieda belongs to one of Hokusai's early but ambitious topographical series, predating Hiroshige's famous Tokaido designs by several decades and demonstrating how Hokusai treated the great highway as a worthy subject for sustained pictorial study. The composition shows his characteristic clarity of line, his careful placement of figures to make landscape feel inhabited, and his eye for the small details that distinguish one post station from another. For nineteenth-century Edo buyers, prints like Fujieda offered both a souvenir of personal travel and an imaginative substitute for journeys not yet taken, while for later viewers they continue to map the texture of early modern Japanese mobility along its most famous route.
