Description
Fukui Bridge in Echizen Province (Echizen Fukui no hashi), dated about 1834, belongs to Katsushika Hokusai's series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyō kiran), one of his late landscape projects that focused on the architectural and engineering wonders of Japan's regional bridges. This print depicts the long pontoon bridge across the Asuwa River at Fukui in Echizen Province, with travelers crossing the line of boats while the town and distant mountains stretch beyond. The composition uses a sweeping diagonal that runs from the lower right corner across to the upper left, anchored by the rhythmic shapes of the moored boats that form the bridge. The Victoria and Albert Museum impression preserves the cool greens and blues of the riverscape along with the precise figural drawing of the travelers crossing the span. As an Edo ukiyo-e print, the design exemplifies how Hokusai treated infrastructure as a worthy subject for monumental landscape, demonstrating both regional pride and the period's growing interest in the topography of Japan beyond Edo and Kyoto. Katsushika Hokusai had reached his seventies by the time this series appeared and was at the peak of his ability to translate complex landscape architecture into legible woodblock design. The Remarkable Views of Bridges series stands as a companion to the Waterfalls and Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji sets and is essential viewing for anyone studying his late period. Collectors particularly value strong impressions of Fukui Bridge because the long horizontal composition makes well-registered printings rare and visually distinctive among Hokusai's mature landscape work.
