Description
History of the Hidden Protection in Japan and China (Wakan inshitsu den) is a moralizing illustrated book by Katsushika Hokusai that gathers stories from both Japanese and Chinese tradition in which acts of secret virtue are rewarded by unseen divine protection. The concept of inshitsu, drawn from Confucian and popular Buddhist sources, holds that quietly performed good deeds, hidden from human observers, accumulate spiritual merit that returns to the doer in this life or the next. Hokusai's volume illustrates a wide range of such episodes, depicting filial sons, just officials, kind women, and humble laborers whose unseen acts are recognized by gods, ancestors, or fate. As a master of Edo ukiyo-e, Hokusai uses the ehon format to combine readable Japanese text with carefully composed images, building each tale into a small dramatic scene anchored in costume, architecture, and gesture. The ukiyo-e print tradition's involvement with didactic books such as this one helped to translate continental ethical teaching into popular Japanese culture, making Confucian and Buddhist morality accessible to literate townspeople. The Harvard Art Museums preserve a fine impression of the work, where the pairing of text and image can be studied page by page. For collectors of Hokusai and of Edo period moral literature, Wakan inshitsu den is a valuable testimony to the seriousness with which late ukiyo-e engaged the most enduring ethical concerns of East Asia.
