Description
Hokusai's Designs for Various Craftsmen (Shoshoku hinagata Hokusai zushiki) is a pattern book by Katsushika Hokusai that supplied artisans of Edo Japan with woodblock-printed templates for use in lacquer, metalwork, textile, ceramic, and architectural decoration. The title's shoshoku, meaning all crafts or every trade, signals the encyclopedic ambition of the volume: to provide designs flexible enough to be adapted across the entire spectrum of Japanese applied art. As a master of Edo ukiyo-e, Hokusai brought to this commercial project the same compositional intelligence visible in his polychrome landscapes and figure prints, recognizing that pattern books were a major vehicle by which his style could enter every household and workshop in Japan. The pages combine emblematic motifs, geometric ornaments, figures, and naturalistic studies, often arranged so that craftsmen could either copy them directly or recombine elements into new compositions. The ukiyo-e print medium, with its capacity for crisp linework and rapid distribution, made such reference books a powerful engine of Japanese visual culture, helping to standardize and disseminate motifs from kimono to architectural carving. The Harvard Art Museums preserve a fine copy where the print and binding remain in excellent condition. For collectors and historians of Japanese design, this book provides a vivid sense of how Hokusai's vision reached well beyond the print sheet into the textures of everyday objects.
