Description
The Illustrated Book of Filial Piety (Ehon kokyo), Volume 1, is a moralizing picture book by Katsushika Hokusai that translates the Confucian classic Xiaojing into an accessible Japanese ukiyo-e idiom. The Classic of Filial Piety, attributed to Confucius and his disciple Zengzi, had been a cornerstone of East Asian ethical instruction for nearly two thousand years; Hokusai's illustrated edition rendered its tenets vivid for an Edo-period readership that increasingly consumed Chinese learning through woodblock-printed Japanese editions. In each scene, dutiful sons and daughters, devoted parents, ministers, and emperors enact exemplary behaviors of respect, sacrifice, and moral courage. As a leading designer of Edo ukiyo-e, Hokusai brings to these austere subjects his sensitivity to architecture, costume, and landscape, framing each parable within a clearly composed Japanese-Chinese stage set. The first volume's compositions reveal Hokusai's mastery of pacing within an ehon, balancing dense text passages with full-page illustrations that punctuate the reading experience. Although best known internationally for landscape ukiyo-e prints, Hokusai's didactic and Confucian books form a significant component of his output and underline the moral seriousness of his late career. The Harvard Art Museums preserve this volume in fine condition, where the printing of line and tone retains the clarity essential to instructional images. For collectors, Ehon kokyo is a key example of how Hokusai bridged classical Chinese ethics and the popular Japanese woodblock book.
