Shichirigahama Beach in Sagami Province (Shoshu Shichirigahama) is a Katsushika Hokusai [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) print from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei), dated about 1825 and held in the Art Institute of Chicago. Shichirigahama, a long sandy beach stretching between Kamakura and Enoshima on the Sagami coast, was famous as a scenic destination accessible by foot from Edo. Hokusai depicts the open sweep of the beach with travelers small against the broad arc of shore, the Pacific stretching out to the horizon, and Mount Fuji rising distantly in the western sky. The composition emphasizes spatial expanse: a low horizon, broad bands of sand and sea, and the steady atmospheric recession that makes the human figures feel part of an immense natural setting. The print's title pairs the local place name with the unifying motif of Fuji, situating Sagami's coastline within the larger Thirty-six Views program. As an Edo ukiyo-e print, the work depends on Prussian blue gradients in the sky and sea, careful [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) tonal printing for sand and cloud, and the deliberately compressed silhouette of Fuji that Hokusai used to make the mountain instantly legible. The Art Institute of Chicago preserves this ukiyo-e print as part of its broad Katsushika Hokusai holdings documenting his transformation of Sagami coastal geography.
