Description
Strange Stories of the Northern Province of Echigo (Hokuetsu kidan), volume 1, is a Katsushika Hokusai illustrated book of 1811 that pairs his designs with a text recounting unusual events, legends, and natural curiosities from the Echigo region along the Sea of Japan. The volume reflects the early-nineteenth-century interest in regional ethnography and local strangeness, and Hokusai's images give visual form to snowy landscapes, mountainous topography, supernatural encounters, and the customs of a province known for its harsh winters. Within the broader landscape of Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) publishing, books of this kind played a complementary role to single-sheet prints by allowing more sustained narrative and documentary treatment of distant places. Hokusai's drawings are alert to specifics, snow piled against eaves, distinctive regional clothing, the rugged silhouettes of the mountains, while preserving the dynamic line and confident composition familiar from his single-sheet ukiyo-e print designs. This copy in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection preserves volume 1 of the publication and offers researchers a clear window into the way Hokusai mobilized his draftsmanship for regional storytelling in the early Edo period of his career.
