Description

The Hanging-cloud Bridge at Mount Gyodo near Ashikaga (Ashikaga Gyodo Kumo no kakehashi), produced about 1834, belongs to Katsushika Hokusai's series Unusual Views of Famous Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran). The narrow plank bridge crossing a deep gorge at Mount Gyodo in present-day Tochigi Prefecture had become a symbol of mountain pilgrimage and ascetic practice. Hokusai depicts pilgrims and porters crossing the high arc, with the bridge surface tilted to emphasise the dizzying drop below. As a ukiyo-e print, the design uses Prussian blue to sink the ravine into atmospheric distance while warm ochre and brown define the supporting cliffs. The composition places the bridge against a near-empty mountain sky, isolating the small figures as participants in a meditative ascent. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London preserves an impression of the print, allowing study of the carved beam structure and the censor and publisher seals associated with the Eijudo workshop. The Bridges series, produced contemporaneously with the late Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji designs, expanded the topographic range of Edo ukiyo-e landscape, drawing attention to the remote crossings and shrines of inland Japan. The Hanging-cloud Bridge underscores Hokusai's lifelong interest in religious geography and in feats of timber engineering. The V&A's collection supports detailed comparison with related designs in the series.
