Description
The Hanging-Cloud Bridge at Mount Gyodo near Ashikaga is one of Katsushika Hokusai's most vertiginous compositions, made around 1828 for the series Unusual Views of Famous Bridges in Various Provinces. The Shokoku meikyo kiran prints catalog dramatic, often spectacularly improbable bridges across Japan; here Hokusai depicts a narrow span of wood roped between two cliffs at Mount Gyodo, where tiny figures inch across the suspended walkway above a deep ravine. The composition emphasizes the sheer vertical drop, with cliffs stacked on either side, mist swirling below, and the bridge cutting a slender line through the void. Hokusai uses imported Prussian blue to suggest atmosphere and depth, integrating cliffs, sky, and pine groves into a tonal whole. The Hanging-Cloud Bridge series is among the boldest experiments in late Edo ukiyo-e landscape, showing how Hokusai pushed at conventional ideas of stable ground and accessible meisho to explore extreme topography. As an ukiyo-e print, the design illustrates Katsushika Hokusai's appetite for unusual subjects and his ability to make architecture, geology, and human courage cohabit on a single sheet. The Art Institute of Chicago holds this impression as part of its broad Hokusai holdings, documenting the Shokoku meikyo kiran's place in his late-1820s landscape practice.
