Description

The Minister Toru (Toru no Otodo) is an ukiyo-e print by Katsushika Hokusai from the series Mirrors of Japanese and Chinese Poems (Shiika shashinkyo), dated about 1828 and held in the Art Institute of Chicago. The series pairs portraits of historical Japanese and Chinese poets with images that illustrate or echo their verse, offering literate Edo audiences a visual anthology of poetic tradition. Minamoto no Toru, a ninth-century Heian aristocrat known as the Minister Toru, was famous for the elaborate gardens of his Rokujo mansion in Kyoto, which he modeled on the famous saltworks of Shiogama in northern Japan. Hokusai's design draws on this biographical legend, placing the minister in a setting that links courtly leisure with distant coastal imagery. Figures dressed in archaic Heian robes interact within or around the recreated saltworks scene, while compositional devices typical of Hokusai's mature manner organize the foreground and middle ground. As an Edo ukiyo-e print, the work shows how Katsushika Hokusai mediated classical literature for a nineteenth-century public, translating the cultural memory of the Heian court into vivid woodblock imagery. The Art Institute of Chicago's impression preserves the muted palette and careful linework that allow the elegiac mood of the poem to coexist with Hokusai's narrative invention.
