Description
Togetsu Bridge at Arashiyama in Yamashiro Province (Yamashiro Arashiyama no Togetsukyo) is a Katsushika Hokusai ukiyo-e print from the series Unusual Views of Famous Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran), dated about 1828 and held in the Art Institute of Chicago. The Togetsu Bridge spans the Oi River at Arashiyama on the western edge of Kyoto, an area celebrated in classical Japanese poetry for cherry blossoms in spring and crimson maples in autumn. Hokusai depicts the long wooden bridge crossing the river beneath wooded hills, with travelers and porters making their way against a backdrop of seasonal foliage. The composition typifies Hokusai's bridges series, which uses the structural geometry of each bridge, span, arch, post, railing, as the organizing armature for the landscape around it. The Arashiyama view leans on the area's classical resonance, evoking centuries of poetic responses to the same scene while documenting the contemporary bridge as it stood in the early nineteenth century. As an Edo ukiyo-e print, the design demonstrates Hokusai's command of layered atmospheric printing, the use of Prussian blue gradients for water and distant hills, and his ability to compress an entire poetic geography into a single oban sheet. The Art Institute of Chicago preserves this ukiyo-e print as part of its broad holdings of Katsushika Hokusai's landscape series.
