From Hokusai's flagship series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (1830–32). Non-iconic designs from this series sold for $30,000–$37,800 at Christie's Mar 2024. A complete set of 46 prints holds the artist record at $3,559,000 (Christie's, Mar 2024).
The mountain pass at Totomi Nakayama — on the section of the Tokaido highway traversing the Akiha mountain range between Kakegawa and Mitsuke — appears in this print from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. The pass offered a demanding upland section where travelers glimpsed Fuji across forested ridges, and Hokusai's treatment likely emphasizes the mountain's unexpected visibility amid the dense vegetation of the interior.
