Description

The mountain pass at Totomi Nakayama — on the section of the Tokaido highway traversing the Akiha mountain range between Kakegawa and Mitsuke — appears in this print from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. The pass offered a demanding upland section where travelers glimpsed Fuji across forested ridges, and Hokusai's treatment likely emphasizes the mountain's unexpected visibility amid the dense vegetation of the interior.
