Description
Wagon of Humorous Odes of Isuzugawa (Isuzugawa kyōka guruma) is a deluxe surimono-style anthology by Katsushika Hokusai that pairs comic verse known as kyoka with elegant Hokusai illustrations. The publication takes its title from the Isuzu River near the Grand Shrine at Ise, anchoring the gathering of poets within a culturally resonant geography. Each opening of the book combines a small painted scene with the calligraphy of one or more kyoka, allowing readers to enjoy the printed page as a unified literary and pictorial object. As a privately commissioned Edo publication, Isuzugawa kyōka guruma exemplifies the highest standards of late-Edo deluxe woodblock printing, with delicate color work, occasional embossing, and fine paper that distinguish surimono-style products from commercial ukiyo-e print runs. The Art Institute of Chicago example preserves these refinements and shows how Hokusai adjusted his pictorial language to the intimate, decorative requirements of kyoka publications. The illustrations range across landscapes, figures, and seasonal motifs, demonstrating Katsushika Hokusai's flexibility within the constraints of the genre. As a ukiyo-e print artist, Hokusai contributed to many such anthologies across his career, and the surviving examples are prized because they bridge the worlds of poetry circles, woodblock production, and pictorial connoisseurship. The Edo ukiyo-e print tradition is sometimes narrowly imagined as a commercial form, but volumes like this one reveal a parallel world of privately printed, exquisitely produced books in which Hokusai operated as both designer and collaborator. Collectors today value Isuzugawa kyōka guruma as evidence of the artistic ecology that surrounded the more familiar single-sheet prints of late Edo Japan.
