Description
"Hukuryoku" presents one of Kyoto's characteristic streets — machiya townhouses lining both sides, their latticed facades at once open and private, the lane itself proportioned to human movement rather than vehicular traffic. Nishijima's Kyoto streets are distinguished by his attention to the specific vocabulary of machiya architecture: the different lattice patterns of weavers' and merchants' houses, the garden walls glimpsed between buildings, the seasonal plantings in entrance approaches. This street carries all of those specificities, rendered in the careful, affectionate precision that defines his best Kyoto work.
