Description
Moon Light depicts a nocturnal scene in which moonlight illuminates a townscape, garden, or landscape — a subject with deep roots in both Japanese painting and woodblock print tradition. Nishijima renders the distinctive quality of moonlit architectural forms: the pale planes of tile roofs and white plaster walls catching the cold light, while wooden facades and narrow lanes fall into shadow. The limited palette of the nocturnal scene — blue-blacks, silver-grays, and the warm glow of interior paper screens contrasting with exterior darkness — requires disciplined color reduction from the multiple-block woodblock process. The architectural geometry of rooflines silhouetted against a night sky, a characteristic compositional device in Nishijima's work, structures the vertical and horizontal rhythms of the composition.
