"Niwatazumi" — puddles after a shower, from the classical Japanese word for the circles that rain makes on standing water — depicts a traditional townscape in the immediate aftermath of a rain shower: the puddles on stone paving reflecting sky and building facades, the surfaces still wet and gleaming, the air carrying the freshness of concluded rain. Nishijima renders these post-shower conditions with his characteristic sensitivity to the way weather transforms familiar scenes: the same facades that appear solid and stable in dry weather become liquid and reflective in the puddle compositions.
