Description

"Shirakawago-no-yanami" presents the rooflines of Shirakawago, the UNESCO World Heritage village in the Shokawa Valley famous for its extraordinary gassho-zukuri farmhouses whose steeply pitched thatched roofs can reach thirty meters in height. Viewed from above, these massive roofs become the dominant element of the landscape — a composition of organic curves and heavy thatch that Nishijima renders with the same precision he brought to the tile rooftiles of Kyoto, but in a dramatically different architectural register. The village rooflines become an abstract study in the relationship between human building and mountain landscape.
