Description
"Shosho" — the end of summer, or the lesser heat — marks the seasonal transition when August's most intense heat begins giving way to the approaching autumn. Nishijima renders this end-of-summer moment in a composition that captures the particular atmospheric quality of a season at its turning point: the quality of light slightly different, the heat still present but no longer absolute, the first hints of change detectable to the trained observer. His sensitivity to seasonal transition moments — the end of things as much as their peak — distinguishes his landscape work from simple seasonal illustration.
