"Yugumo" — evening clouds — depicts the cloud formations that gather in the late afternoon and early evening, backlit by the setting sun into dramatic shapes of purple and orange. Nishijima renders these evening clouds in relation to the architectural silhouettes of traditional buildings below: the dynamic sky contrasted against the static rooflines, the transient atmospheric event set against the enduring built forms. His evening cloud subjects develop the tension between permanence and change that runs through all his atmospheric studies.
