Cartoons by Kyôsai (Kyôsai manga)
Description
A woodblock-printed collection of Kyosai's cartoons and caricatures, gathered under the title "Kyosai manga" — the word "manga" here carrying its older meaning of "impromptu sketches" rather than its modern sense of comic books. Like Hokusai's celebrated Hokusai Manga before it, Kyosai's compilation presented an encyclopedic range of subject matter: gods, demons, animals, comic figures, ordinary people, and fantastical creatures drawn with bewildering speed and sureness. These publications were enormously influential on later generations of Japanese illustrators.
