Comic sketch, diptych

A comic [diptych](/glossary/diptych) — two sheets working together — presenting one of Kyosai's characteristically energetic scenes of comedy or caricature. The diptych format was less common than the [triptych](/glossary/triptych) in Japanese printmaking, and Kyosai's choice of it suggests a deliberate compositional decision: the two panels likely present a contrast, a confrontation, or a before-and-after that requires exactly this doubled frame. Even without fuller contextual documentation, the work exemplifies his economy of means and abundance of wit.
