Description
The first volume of Kyosai's remarkable theoretical and autobiographical text on painting, published in 1887 near the end of his life, in which he discussed his methods, his teachers, his philosophy of art, and the nature of creative inspiration. Kyosai was one of the most articulate painter-writers of his era, and the Gyosai Gadan — "Gyosai" being an alternative reading of his name — offers invaluable primary source material for understanding an artist who was anything but a passive inheritor of tradition. The woodblock-printed format gave it wide distribution.
