Description

A print from the "Scenes of Famous Places along the Tokaido" series depicting the great palace complex of Kyoto — seat of the emperor and repository of a thousand years of court culture — with its encircling wall and the formal grandeur of the Jomeimon Gate. For Kyosai, who had grown up in a Japan where Kyoto's primacy was being challenged by the rising commercial and political power of Edo (Tokyo), the imperial capital retained an almost sacred aura. The composition honors both the architecture and the historical weight it carries.
