Description

This impression of the Kuwana mirage design is part of Kyosai's contribution to the long tradition of Tōkaidō meisho-e — a genre that stretches from Hiroshige's celebrated Fifty-Three Stations to later Meiji-period reinterpretations. The series title Gyōretsu Tōkaidō, meaning Processional Tōkaidō, frames the famous places along the road as stops encountered during the sankin-kōtai processions of daimyo traveling to and from Edo. Kuwana was the embarkation point for the sea crossing of Ise Bay, and the shinkirō mirage was among the natural spectacles travelers hoped to witness. Kyosai, known for his fluency in a range of pictorial modes, adapts the meisho format while bringing his distinctive draftsmanship to the water and air effects that define this scene. The oban format accommodates the horizontal sweep of bay and sky.
