Description
This second version of Nagoya Castle presents one of Japan's most architecturally distinctive fortifications, known for its paired shachihoko—gilded dolphin-tiger roof ornaments—atop the main tower donjon. Hasui likely depicted the castle from the south or east, where the massive stone base (nori-ishigaki) rises from a broad moat, with seasonal trees—perhaps cherry blossoms or autumn maples—softening the foreground. This variant may represent a different season, lighting condition, or publisher compared to the primary version. Nagoya Castle was a subject of considerable national interest following its 1945 destruction and postwar reconstruction, and Hasui's multiple treatments reflect both personal interest and the subject's commercial demand.
