Description
A large gnarled pine tree with an exposed, cave-like hollow in its trunk dominates the foreground, its thick branches spreading across the top of the composition; small red-robed figures with white hair (a troop of monkeys or goblin-like creatures) clamber over the roots, trunk, and branches. Below and beyond the tree, a river crossed by a bridge leads to a distant cluster of rooftops nestled among green hills. The palette is dominated by earthy browns and greens with touches of red and blue, framed by a title cartouche in the upper right, consistent with its identification as Kawanabe Kyosai's "Mount Akiba," from the series *Scenes of Famous Places along the Tôkaidô Road*.
