Description

A second impression of the Akiba-san design from Kyosai's Tōkaidō meisho no uchi series, this print captures the mountain landmark that stood as one of the notable sights along the highway between Edo and Kyoto. Akiba-san carried both scenic and religious significance: its forested slopes and prominent summit were visually distinctive, and the Akiha Shrine drew pilgrims and prayers from communities across Japan seeking protection from fire. In the context of the Gyōretsu Tōkaidō series, the mountain appears as a backdrop to the movement of a procession through its surrounding landscape. The oban format allows Kyosai to extend the composition horizontally, contrasting the stable mass of the mountain against the horizontal sweep of the road and sky. Careful registration of multiple woodblocks would have been required to achieve the layered tonal effects — from forested lower slopes to the mountain's open summit — that give the design spatial coherence.
