Description

This impression of Okazaki from the Tôkaidô meisho no uchi series presents the Yahagi River crossing that made this Mikawa post town one of the visually definitive stops along the eastern sea road. The Yahagi-bashi bridge and the river it spanned were among the most reproduced subjects in the Tôkaidô meisho-e tradition, from Hiroshige's multiple series through the later publishers who revisited the road's famous places in the Meiji period. Kyosai's contribution to this meisho-e lineage reflects his position as a major figure working across the transition from Edo to Meiji artistic culture — aware of the conventions he inherits and technically capable of either honoring or subverting them. The print likely employs standard polychrome nishiki-e techniques, with the broad river surface built from overlapping passes of blue and green ink on absorbent washi, and the castle and town rendered in warm earth tones against an open sky.
