A print depicting Shoki the Demon Queller astride a tiger, chasing away demons in an image associated with the fifth month (the Boys' Festival or Tango no Sekku), from one of Kyosai's beloved series on the theme. Shoki was a Chinese deity adopted into Japanese iconography as the supreme subduer of evil spirits, and his combination with the tiger — itself a creature of power and protection — created an image of intensified protective energy. Kyosai painted and printed this subject many times, each version finding fresh angles of drama and humor.
