Description

A variant impression of the Snipe Marsh design from the Tôkaidô meisho series, catalogued here under the series subtitle Tôkaidô meisho no uchi. The snipe subject at a marsh station integrates the kacho-e bird-and-flower tradition into the meisho travel framework — a combinatory approach typical of the eclectic Tôkaidô series format, which mixed landscape, genre, historical, and natural history subjects across its fifty-three stations. Shigi tatsu sawa would have resonated with viewers through its poetic associations: the snipe rising from marsh grasses appears in classical waka poetry as an image of startled solitude, lending the topographic subject an additional literary register. Variation between this impression and related states may reflect differences in the color saturation of the wet ground and sky areas, where bokashi technique was applied to model atmospheric depth. The washi substrate's absorbency directly affected the blush and gradation quality across impression runs.
