A large-format print from 1863 depicting the children's sumo wrestling event held at Tenpōzan in Osaka — a popular summer entertainment in which young boys competed before cheering crowds in a miniature version of the adult sport. Kyosai loved children's subjects and brought to them the same observational acuity he gave to adult subjects: the boys are fully individual, their effort and concentration genuine, the surrounding crowd animated by real excitement. The Tenpōzan venue, at the mouth of the Yodo River in Osaka, was among the most popular pleasure destinations of the era.
