A print from the series "Tokyo kaika meisho no uchi" — Famous Views of Tokyo's Civilization — one of a number of series depicting the modernizing capital of Meiji Japan with its new Western-style architecture, gas lamps, horse-drawn carriages, and transformed streetscapes. Kyosai's engagement with the changing city was characteristically double-edged: he documented the new Tokyo with genuine curiosity while his satirical works made clear that he found much of the transformation ridiculous. These views provide an invaluable visual record of the city in transformation.
