Description
Two black crows perch on a gnarled, moss-hung branch that cuts diagonally across the upper half of the composition, one bird facing left with beak open as if calling, the other turned rightward with its back to the viewer. Their forms are rendered in dense black ink with feathering brushwork, set against a pale grey wash sky and sparse red-tinged foliage; below, a small red sun sits low over a misty horizon line of distant trees and faint birds in flight. A red seal and vertical inscription appear to the right of the birds. Kawanabe Kyosai, 1883; hanging scroll, ink and color on silk.
