Description
Clear Autumn Day captures the crisp, high-pressure weather typical of mid-autumn in Japan, when the air is dry and visibility extends to distant ridges. Ohtsu would construct the scene around the contrast between the cool blue sky — likely rendered with a horizontal [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation — and the warm reds, oranges, and golds of momiji maples or rice straw drying in fields. The print belongs to the autumn-foliage subgenre that runs through centuries of Japanese woodblock work, from Hiroshige's late series through Kawase Hasui's [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) views. Ohtsu's contribution to this tradition is its domestication: rather than famous viewing spots, his autumn scenes tend to depict ordinary rural settings where the season is observed in a single farmyard or hillside. The clarity of the title suggests a composition with sharp shadows and a sense of stillness in the air, qualities the woodblock medium handles through clean keyblock outlines and unmodulated color fields.
