Description
Meigetsu-in is a Rinzai Zen subtemple of Engaku-ji in Kita-Kamakura, famous for its hydrangeas in June and its single round window (the 'Window of Enlightenment') framing a small autumn garden. This print most likely depicts that view — the circular wooden window opening onto a composition of momiji in autumn color, or alternatively the temple's stone steps and approach path beneath a canopy of red and gold maples. The architectural framing through the round window is a celebrated Japanese visual device, and Ohtsu's mokuhanga rendering would capture the contrast between the dark, weathered timber of the temple interior and the saturated reds beyond. Such temple-garden subjects connect Ohtsu's work to the [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) tradition — prints of famous places — though his treatment is consistently more intimate and less topographic than Edo-period predecessors. The autumn light at Meigetsu-in is part of why the temple draws visitors, and the print preserves that specific seasonal experience as a contemplative image, in keeping with Ohtsu's recurring interest in places where traditional Japan persists.
