Castle, Moon & Birds is a color print by Keiko Minami (1911-2004), one of the most distinctive figures of postwar Paris-Japan printmaking. The composition assembles three motifs that recur throughout Minami's mature work: a stylized castle or turreted building, a luminous moon, and a flock of small birds threading the sky. Rendered in flat fields of muted color with crisply etched silhouettes, the image has the quality of a remembered storybook image rather than a topographical record, treating the castle as a fairy-tale silhouette rather than a specific monument.
Minami trained at the Joshibi School of Fine Arts in Tokyo before moving to Paris in 1954, where she joined her husband, the printmaker Hisao Domoto, and entered the orbit of Atelier 17 under Stanley William Hayter. Although she lived most of her adult life in France, she remained anchored to the visual vocabulary she absorbed in Japan, and her career is now understood as a key chapter in the broader history of Paris-Japan printmaking: Japanese-born artists who carried the sensibility of Japanese woodblock and ink painting into a European printmaking culture, working primarily in etching and aquatint while preserving an unmistakable East Asian sensitivity to flat pattern, asymmetric layout, and lyrical economy.
The Harvard Art Museums copy that documents this impression preserves the print's characteristic tonal range, where the moon hovers above a horizon punctuated by the silhouetted castle and the small dark accents of birds. The motif of birds in flight at moonrise reflects a poetic register that Minami returned to throughout her life, often described by collectors as childlike but never naive. Composed with the formal restraint of a Japanese woodblock yet executed in the intaglio techniques of her Paris workshop, Castle, Moon & Birds typifies the cross-cultural synthesis that made Keiko Minami one of the most internationally collected Japanese printmakers of her generation.
