Mount Fuji had been a fixed subject of Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) for decades by the time Eisen returned to it in his mature career, and his treatment here trades on a particularly Edo conceit: the great mountain is framed not through an open landscape but through the lattice and roofline of a roadside tea house. Travelers seated on a raised matted floor look out across a sweep of fields and middle-distance hills toward the white cone of Fuji, while a serving woman moves between the room and a low charcoal brazier. The framing turns the volcano into the focal element of an everyday scene of rest and refreshment, a meta-pictorial move that Eisen would have known from earlier prints by Hokusai and from related compositions in painting. Eisen's drafting is firm but unobtrusive: the lattice of the tea house is rendered with patient parallel lines, the figures with the long ovals and rounded shoulders of his [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) vocabulary, and the mountain with the broad [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation that gives its slopes their characteristic atmospheric softness.
