$500–$4,000. Common prints: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Sasajima's meditative prints appeal to collectors of both Japanese prints and modern art.
Dated 1946, this woodblock print in ink on paper captures the atmosphere of late summer, that transitional moment when heat begins to relent and the first hints of autumn enter the landscape. Created in the immediate aftermath of World War II, the print belongs to Sasajima's earliest mature work. The ink-only palette strips the summer landscape to its essentials, relying on tonal contrast and the texture of the carved block to convey warmth, growth, and the heaviness of vegetation at its peak. Late summer in the Japanese aesthetic tradition carries associations with both abundance and approaching decline, a bittersweet awareness that may have carried particular resonance in the devastated Japan of 1946. The sosaku-hanga method of self-carving and self-printing suited the material constraints of the postwar period, when commercial printing resources were scarce.
