AKAITAIYO — Red Sun — the sun depicted in its most vivid, concentrated form: the red disc that appears at sunrise and sunset, when the atmosphere's scattering of blue light leaves only the red wavelengths to reach the viewer. The red sun was associated in Japanese culture with the national flag (Hinomaru) and with the passionate intensity of sunrise and sunset light. Kimura's contemporary woodblock treatment presents the red disc as a graphic element of maximum visual force.
