Description
Eastern Moon — the moon as it rises in the east, the first appearance of the lunar disc above the horizon. The eastern moon subject was a classic of the Japanese landscape tradition — the low moon large and golden as it clears the horizon, before it ascends to the cold, silver disc of midnight. Kimura's contemporary woodblock rendering likely captures the moon in this liminal moment of rising, the relationship between the disc and the eastern horizon giving the composition its essential visual structure.
