Description
Karuizawa Swamp — Impression B — depicts the marshy lowland terrain of Karuizawa, the highland resort town in Nagano prefecture known for its cool summers and the foreign missionaries and early modernizers who built Western-style houses there. The swamp or wetland subject — the still, reflective water of a marsh rather than the moving water of rapids or ocean — allowed Kimura to explore a different visual quality of water: passive, reflective, mysteriously dark. The "Impression B" designation suggests a second compositional approach to the same subject.
